The Summer Slowdown

by Andrew

Anyone seeing signs of the summer slow down? This time of year usually results in lower revenue both from less users and fewer advertisers (possibly, they certainly crank up the spending as Christmas approaches.)

It can be a little demotivating to see numbers on established sites drop. I think its a good time to build and test sites to launch when things begin to pick back up again near September.

Right now there are between 190 and 191 days left in 2007 (191 for those west of London to the international dateline.) We are rapidly approaching the halfway mark for 2007. If your yearly goal checklist is needs more marks, now is crunch time.

  1. My stuff has gone up actually, and as far as clients they are going up too. Income has gone down due to some bigger sites dropping SERPS.

Summer = Going to lake a lot for me so I love it.

  2. Yup I’m seeing the summer slowdown as well. It started happening around last week. Today has been a horrible day income wise….summer plus the weekends are brutal. Will it be like this all summer long?

  3. Diversify your portfolio.

While I agree certain verticals go down during this time of year (Real Estate, Edu Leads, B2B etc) other verticals actually go up. A true super affiliate makes money in both cases.

Use Google Trends. Focus on Entertainment, Vacation, Kids

  4. While the total numbers change each year, the overall traffic patterns for my site are as predictable as the change of the seasons. Every summer for years my average daily traffic numbers fall at a steady pace from the end of May until the bottom out in July. Then come mid August they begin their climb once again.

The drop in traffic and resulting decline in revenue makes one not look forward to summer with the same egger anticipation as others might.
